“I LOVE A PIXELATED COUNTRY”
(The RUNDLE LANTERN goes REGIONAL)
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
My Country by Dorethea Mackeller
As Country Arts SA’s and Illuminart’s Digital Salons roam across the state we are offering the opportunity for 4 regional based artists to design a digital art work for the Rundle Lantern.
The Rundle Lantern is a unique canvas that uses computer controlled LEDs to illuminate 748 square panels to deliver a platform for digital art. It operates each night from dusk until midnight, with hours for special events. Constructed around the Rundle Street UPark, its purpose is to enrich, invigorate and enliven the intersection of Rundle Street and Pultney Street. At 1066 square metres, the Rundle Lantern can be programmed to display numbers, letters and geometric shapes as well as an infinite array of lights, colour, morphing designs and patterns as has featured works by recognised Australian artists and emerging artists alike.
We want artists to explore and pixelate their version of their country, dreams, thoughts and region to design a digital work that will be witnessed by thousands of commuters and shoppers in Adelaide.
Country Arts SA’s Geek In Residence, Cindi Drennan will select 4 artists whilst she travels the Digital Salons across the state.
The artists selected will participate on an online forum and a weekend workshop where New Media Creative Director, Lachlan Tetlow Stuart will provide tuition through an on line forum and skype sessions for the artists, book ending and supporting a two day face to face session, covering technical requirements, history about the lantern’s creation, past work that has been shown, plus conceptual approaches and challenges that the Lantern presents along with software / hands on tips and tricks to using the software involved.
Artists selected will be provided with $750 commissioning monies + $250 towards travel and accommodation for the weekend workshop.
Artists will be required to be available on line for the online forums and skype sessions between May 16th to 27th and in person for the workshop in Adelaide on May 21st & 22nd 2011.

Rundle Lantern
The “Lantern” is a large building on the corner of Rundle Street and Pulteney Street in Adelaide SA. It is a unique canvas that uses computer controlled LEDs to illuminate 748 square panels to deliver a platform for digital art. It operates each night from dusk until midnight.
At 1066 square metres, the Rundle Lantern can be programmed to display numbers, letters and geometric shapes as well as an infinite array of lights, colour, morphing designs and patterns. It is a massive canvas that is 100% green-powered and the light show is carbon neutral. The Lantern’s LEDs use less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs and the lifespan of an LED lamp is 100 times that of a conventional bulb. The panels are installed at an angle to allow 50% air flow throughout the floors of the UPark for ventilation. You can find out more about the lantern here. http://www.rundlelantern.com.au/ and here is a link to a video of The Rundle Lantern, Adelaide from Martin Whipp on Vimeo.
